Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes

I’ve made a lot of mashed potatoes in my life, and this is hands down my favorite way to make them! Instant Pot Mashed Potatoes are quick, simple and turn out perfectly every single time.

Making Mashed Potatoes in your Instant Pot is a simple and hands-off method for making this family favorite.  Save yourself lots of hassle with this method since you don’t have to worry about watching water boil for minutes on end. 
 
Using your Instant Pot provides consistency every time you make Mashed Potatoes.  The timing is always the same when using the Instant Pot, so you know how long it will take which takes a lot of the guesswork out of planning meals. 
 
After you’ve made your potatoes, you can keep them warm in the Instant Pot for up to 2 hours after mashing.

Ingredients You’ll Need To Make Mashed Potatoes In Your Instant Pot…

  • russet potatoes *
  • butter (regular or plant based)
  • cream cheese (regular or dairy free)
  • milk (regular or dairy free)
  • salt

* Russet or yukon potatoes make the best mashed potatoes.

How To Make Mashed Potatoes In An Instant Pot:

  1. Peel and dice potatoes
  2. Place in Instant Pot and add enough water to cover
  3. Seal and set to high pressure for 8 minutes
  4. When cooking is completed, quick release the pressure from the pot
  5. Drain water and return potatoes to pot or to a large bowl
  6. Add remaining ingredients and mix with hand mixer or potato masher until smooth

Pro Tips:

Starchy potatoes make the best mashed potatoes.  Russet potatoes are the most traditionally used variety.  Yukon potatoes are also make delicious, creamy mashed potatoes.
 
These potatoes are very creamy and full of flavor.  For fluffier mashed potatoes, use heavy whipping cream instead of cream cheese.  Start with 1/4 cup of cream and add more until desired consistency is reached. 
 
Be careful not to over-mash!  Over-mashed potatoes have a gummy texture. A hand masher is a great tool for making perfect mashed potatoes.

  • 2 pounds russet potatoes
  • 1/4 cup butter regular or plant based
  • 4 oz cream cheese regular or dairy free
  • 2 tablespoons milk regular or dairy free
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Instructions

  • Peel and dice potatoes
  • Place in Instant Pot and add enough water to cover

Notes

  • Russet potatoes and yukon potatoes make the best mashed potatoes
