If you are looking for specifics on which foods do and don't freeze well, check out this post.
So, you've invested time and money in preparing these meals, now you want to make sure they don't go to waste. We couldn't agree more! Here are our favorite tips for freezing food.
- The easiest and simplest option? Zippered freezer bags! They are inexpensive, disposable and easily available. To make them easy to fill, we recommend a set of these stands. The most important thing will be to make sure that while you are sealing them that you also remove as much air as possible. This can be done by closing all but a 1 inch portion and then carefully squeezing the remaining air out before completely closing. Use a permanent marker to label with the name of recipe and the date prepared. Also add any cooking instructions on the bag so you don't have to refer back to the recipe.
- Plastic freezer containers are another option if you don't care for the disposable aspect of the plastic bags. The challenge can be finding sizes that are large enough to accommodate the whole meal. You will want to make sure they seal well, and if they are not completely full you will want to add a layer of plastic wrap over the food to keep the excess air from causing freezer burn. You can generally find these types of containers anywhere from restaurant/heavy duty grade to semi-disposable. These labels are great and easily removable for the next time you use the containers.
- Vacuum sealing systems are amazing but are a little pricey. If you want to make sure your food stays good for a long time this is the best option. This will remove all of that pesky air that causes food to spoil or get freezer burn. The major downside to this is the cost of the system and the refill bags, not to mention the extra time it will take to set up and clean up. However, if you do a significant amount of making ahead and freezing meals, this is likely a great option for you. Just make sure to label your bags!
