Whether you are just trying to get daily meals on the table, or you are hosting a bunch of friends, family or neighbors for a special occasion, my biggest suggestion would be to always keep it simple! Why do I say this? Well, it's because I've learned the hard way. I always think I can do more than what is realistic or I want to try too many new recipes all at once and then end up completely overwhelmed. Please learn from me and don't do this! Pick just the right amount of food, prep ahead as much as possible and let the slow cookers do the work! That way you will leave plenty of time for all of the other aspects of life and entertaining.
- Unless you are super confident in the kitchen, or you have a trusted recipe source, don't make your main dish recipe something you've never made before.
- Pick a main dish that you know will be the star of the show. Pick something that you know will turn out well and that your guests will love.
- Keep your sides simple. Anything that you can make ahead of time is a winner! A salad that just needs to be tossed with dressing, a veggie that is prepped and ready for the oven or an appetizer tray that's already made up will take away all the last minute stress.
- Get all of your bowls, servings and utensils out at least a day in advance so that if anything is missing you can find it or find a replacement.
- Get disposable dinnerware. They make a lot of really cute dinnerware these days and it will save you hours of clean up time.
- Use your slow cooker! I will often have 2-3 slow cookers going depending on how many people I'm entertaining. That way I can get food started in the morning, have plenty of time to clean up and then actually have time to get myself ready too!
- Don't worry about everything being perfect! Clean up the rooms you will use but no need to make them pristine! Guests will feel more comfortable if they don't have to worry about spilling crumbs or not sitting on the furniture. Do your best with the food but don't worry if something isn't just right. Everyone will just be glad to be there and enjoy the fun!
