In the simplest terms, an air fryer is a kitchen gadget that uses a fan to blow hot air around food in a basket to cook it. They’ve become available for consumer use over the last ten years or so and have been growing in popularity recently (and for good reason!). An air fryer uses less oil than traditional frying methods to make crispy food but can also be used in other food preparation methods as well.
Do you use oil in an air fryer?
Yes. And no! An air fryer is really more like a convection oven and is not a deep fryer. You don’t cook the food in oil, and many foods don’t need any added oil in order to cook them. That being said, some foods, like chicken wings, will benefit from a thin layer of oil in order to get crispy. But, if you want to use it more like an oven to make pizza, no oil is needed!
Do Air Fryers actually work?
While air fryers won’t create the same deep fried flavor and texture of traditional frying, they do deliver amazing results that can be much healthier. I’ve made many recipes in my air fryer and most turn out with great results. I’ve done everything from pork chops to chicken nuggets and been pleased with the ease and results nearly every time.
What are the benefits of an air fryer?
- reduced cooking time – air frying takes about 1/2 the time of a traditional oven recipe
- less oil and mess
- doesn’t heat up your entire house
- perfect for quick meals like heating up frozen foods
- easy to use
