What’s not to love about meatballs? I’ve made many versions over the years and my current obsession are these Healthy Baked Turkey Meatballs. A few simple ingredients that come together in just a few minutes and create the most juicy, tasty baked meatballs that your family is sure to devour. A simple swap of seasonings and you can totally change the dinner! I went for a more traditional Italian version here with an herb and garlic seasoning, but the options are as plenty as your imagination.
How do you make homemade meatballs?
- you’ll need to start with a base of ground meat or a combo of ground meats. 1 pound will generally feed 4 people.
- add an egg which will act as a binder to hold it all together – you don’t want too much or your meatballs will be dense. One small egg is good for one pound of meat.
- breadcrumb/milk mixture – this helps keep the meatballs tender (and not like a burger texture). It’s fine line because too many breadcrumbs and the meatballs will fall apart, too few and they will be tough. In this recipe, I actually swap out traditional breadcrumbs and milk for ground flax and almond milk.
- seasoning – go crazy here and make these your own signature recipe
How long do you bake turkey meatballs at 400 degrees?
- it depends on the size of the meatballs, but the range of 15-20 minutes in general
- for food safety you’ll want them to reach an internal temp of 165 degrees (I always recommend using a meat thermometer)
- I made 8 equal sized meatballs using an ice cream scooper. 2 meatballs per person I find is generally the perfect serving size and they took right at 20 minutes to finish cooking.
I served these up with a simple pasta and marinara sauce, but I often eat them with veggie noodles too! That, or as a main course with a side of mashed potatoes would be pretty tasty too! For other delicious ways to eat ground turkey, make sure you check out my turkey meatloaf!
