Ready to discover the most perfect hash browns that are actually crispy – minus the mess and added grease? Try air fryer hash browns the next time you have a craving for breakfast potatoes. Plus, the cleanup is so easy!
What’s To Love About This Recipe
- First on the list of things to love is the tasty result. Toasty hash browns without the heaviness of greasy frying oil – yes, please!
- The air fryer is by far the simplest cooking method for hash brown potatoes. No need for a hot pan and splatter guard, or a super hot oven. The air fryer also cooks the hash browns quicker than other methods.
- I love making hash browns this way because it’s hands-free. For a big breakfast or brunch, I can add the potatoes to the fryer and focus on eggs or pancakes that need more attention.
- The ingredients are entirely in your control, so you can enjoy your hash browns a little more knowing exactly what’s in them! Look for hash browns without any extra preservatives or oils, and change up the seasoning if you’d like.
Ingredients Needed
- Frozen shredded hash browns – Use a 16-ounce bag of shredded hash brown potatoes and check the ingredients to find a brand with 100% potato, if possible. Mr. Dell’s All Natural Hash Browns is one of my favorite brands, and it is usually easy to find at Walmart stores. The Sprouts store brand is another good option!
- Avocado oil spray – Avocado oil works well for achieving crispiness or a fried texture. It works best at a higher flash point and won’t burn easily in the air fryer. The oil spray is easy to use on the air fryer basket and the potatoes.
- Seasoned salt – Add just a bit of seasoned salt to get the best savory flavor on your crispy hash browns.
Note: When using packaged and frozen foods, I always like to look at the ingredient list – even if it seems obvious! With many preservatives and added ingredients, the hash browns won’t cook as well or taste the best. This is why I look for hash browns with only potatoes on the ingredient label.
How To Make Hash Browns In The Air Fryer
- Spray the air fryer basket with a small amount of oil to coat the cooking surface.
- Spread the frozen hash browns in a single layer in the basket.
- Spray the hash browns with a bit more oil to coat.
- Cook at 370 ℉ in the air fryer for 10 minutes, then flip the potatoes.
- Spray the top with a bit more oil and sprinkle with seasoning.
- Finish cooking until crispy, about 4-5 more minutes.
Pro Tips
- When using the air fryer, it’s important to allow plenty of room for airflow. Depending on the size of your air fryer, you may need to cook the hash browns in batches.
- Use enough oil to ensure that the potatoes brown, but not so much oil that they end up soggy and dripping. You can always start with a little and add more as needed.
How To Serve Air Fryer Hash Browns
Hash browns are a breakfast staple. And, even better news – breakfast food works for any meal of the day!
Serve up some crispy hash browns with your favorite style of eggs, pancakes, or bacon from the air fryer, too! If you’re in the mood to go all out on a hearty breakfast or brunch, try hash browns as a side for Skillet Biscuits and Gravy Casserole.
Also, add hash browns to any other foods that go well with potatoes! Serve them with grilled sandwiches, Fresh Salmon Patties, or other roasted vegetables.
Storing and Reheating
I will often make a big batch of hash browns and reheat them as I go for quick breakfasts throughout the week. You can store the hash browns in the fridge for up to 3 days and reheat them in the air fryer or a skillet.
If you have enough leftovers, you can also freeze the hash browns! I recommend putting them in small batches on top of parchment paper or a baking sheet and freezing them in portions. Then, once frozen, you can transfer to a freezer bag and just defrost individual servings as needed.
